Tour Overview
If you’re landing in Surabaya and want to see the most iconic volcano in Indonesia without rushing, this Mount Bromo Tour from Surabaya 2 Day is exactly what you need. Instead of a exhausting midnight dash, we take it slow. We’ll pick you up directly from Surabaya (Airport, Hotel, or Train Station) on Day 1, drive you up to the highlands of Cemoro Lawang, and let you soak in the atmosphere before the big sunrise hike the next morning.
This isn’t a crowded bus tour. It’s a private experience designed to let you see the Tengger Caldera at your own pace. Before you pack your bags, make sure to read our Mount Bromo travel guide to understand what makes this place so special. We’ve timed everything so you hit the best sunrise viewpoints before the crowds get too overwhelming. We also recommend checking the best time to visit so you get those clear, starry skies East Java is famous for. Since the temperature drops significantly at night, knowing what to wear to Mount Bromo is essential for a comfortable trip. Finally, we’ll guide you all the way up to the Mount Bromo crater rim to hear the volcano roar.

Who Is This Tour Best For?

- Families: The 2-day pace is much easier on kids than the 1-day midnight tour.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Surabaya Arrival & Drive to Bromo
Our driver will meet you at Surabaya Juanda Airport (SUB), a train station, or your hotel at 10:00 AM (flexible). We’ll head toward the village of Cemoro Lawang, the gateway to Bromo. The drive takes about 3-4 hours. After checking into your hotel, you have the afternoon free to walk to the edge of the village and see the massive caldera for the first time. It’s a great time for sunset photos at Mentigen Hill.
Day 2: The Ultimate Bromo Sunrise & Return to Surabaya
Wake up at 3:00 AM. Your private 4WD Jeep will be waiting outside. We’ll drive through the dark Sea of Sand and climb up to King Kong Hill or Penanjakan. Coffee in hand, you’ll watch the sky turn from deep purple to fiery orange as the sun rises over Bromo, Batok, and the smoking Semeru in the distance.
After sunrise, the Jeep takes you down into the caldera. You’ll hike (or take a horse) across the sand to the base of Bromo, climb the 250 stairs, and look directly into the smoking crater. We’ll finish the morning at the Savanna and Whispering Sands before heading back for breakfast. By 11:00 AM, we’ll start the drive back to Surabaya, dropping you off by 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
Mount Bromo Experience
Visiting Bromo is more than just a photo op; it’s a sensory experience. You’ll smell the sulfur in the air and hear the “rumble” of the earth. The Tengger people consider this mountain sacred, and you’ll see small offerings left at the crater rim. Our guides are locals who grew up in these mountains—they know the secret spots for photos and the best times to move to avoid the heaviest crowds.
Tour Difficulty & Physical Requirements
This tour is rated as Moderate. While the Jeep does most of the heavy lifting, there is some walking involved:
- Sunrise Point: A short 5-10 minute walk from the Jeep parking area.
- Crater Hike: About 1.5km of walking on sandy terrain, followed by 250 concrete stairs. If you’re not feeling up for the walk, local horse rides are available for hire.
- Altitude: You’ll be at roughly 2,300 meters. Most people don’t feel altitude sickness, but you might get winded more easily.
